When E-mail is God

Time and time again we complain about e-mail and information overload.

At the same time, numerous surveys show that in terms of internal communication, the most preferred communication is personal and verbal communication while communication budgets are primarily spent on intranets and employee magazines.

Some ten years ago, when I started my first professional job, I was very surprised that the organization I worked for did not use E-mail, let alone had a decent website. Two years later I started working for a new company, where e-mail was God and the Intranet non-existent. Again, I was quite surprised, which in the end resulted in me carrying out an internal survey and analysis with a view to designing and creating a proper intranet. Well, that was then. Right now, I am working with corporate branding for a company that has no intranet, nor an employee magazine. Instead, E-mail acts as God along with a few monitors showing the corporate values, mission and vision.

So it makes it really difficult to ensure good internal communication, knowledge-sharing and a sense of belonging to a modern organization. What a pity!
